Residency Training Program

The PGY-1 year, so-called internship, includes three month rotations on Orthopaedics (both at University Hospital and at Wishard Memorial Hospital), with rotations on General Surgery, Rheumatology, General Medicine, Intensive Care Unit, Trauma Service and Plastics. The PGY-2 and 3 years are considered the junior resident rotations. During those years, rotation through each service is accomplished a minimum of one time. The PGY-4 and 5 years are considered senior, with increasing responsibilities given to the resident at each hospital.

Five applicants are chosen for entry into the five-year program. While the appointment is for the first year only, it is the understanding that each will complete the prescribed five year course.

Indiana University School of Medicine is a large school, and the residents will be responsible for instructing both junior and senior medical students in outpatient clinics, ward responsibilities and in the operating room.

Outpatients
The residency training program has a strong outpatient component. The Wishard Memorial Hospital, Riley Children's Hospital and V.A. Hospital have an exceedingly large number of outpatient visits because of the general nature of their referral base. Outpatients at University Hospital for the most part are referred to private clinics, in which the junior residents take active part with the attending faculty.

Life After the Residency
Approximately 60% of our residents seek fellowship training upon completion of their residency. There are various reasons for this, but primarily these individuals plan to subspecialize in a multispecialty group or are going into an academic arena that requires some area of subspecialization. Residents have been obtaining quality fellowships in major teaching centers across the country without difficulty. In the past several years, one of five residents has chosen to go into academic careers.

Research
The Department is involved in diverse research projects, mostly of a clinical nature.

Each resident will complete a minimum of one research project during their residency training program. The model for these projects is at the end of the PGY-2 year, a project and faculty sponsor are identified, and this is carried on through the PGY-3 and 4 years, to be presented at the annual Garceau-Wray Lectures in June of the PGY-4 year. Residents are required to submit a publication-ready manuscript of their research by December of their PGY-5 year.

Affiliated Rotations
During the PGY-3 or 4 year, 10-week blocks of time are set aside for special rotations in hand surgery and sports orthopaedics.
